Landing memories since 1950.

Pine Island Lodge

Founded in 1950 by Vic Burgess.

Vic was an avid fisherman and hunter who, with friends, often made the arduous journey from the town of Lac du Bonnet to fish the pristine waters of the Winnipeg River. As there was no road back then, the group travelled by flatbed rail car from Lac du Bonnet to Point du Bois, laden with canoes, supplies, and gear. It took two days of strenuous paddling to reach their fishing destination, so they usually stopped in at Pine Island for a rest. Vic appreciated the 17-acre island for its beautiful views, natural horseshoe harbour (protecting canoes and boats from the wind), and access to abundant Walleye, Northern Pike, and Smallmouth Bass fishing. He dreamed of one day establishing a fishing camp on Pine Island and set to work, one cabin at a time.

By the summer of 1950, four cabins and the lodge had been built on the island. Over the ensuing years, Vic and his wife, Tommie, continued to expand the fishing lodge while raising their three boys: Kent, Brian, and Gerry. The boys spent much of their childhood on the island and it was said they all knew how to drive a boat before learning to ride a bike!

Gerry, youngest brother of the Burgess family, guided at the lodge for almost 50 years. He was hands down the island expert in boat engine maintenance and without a doubt, the most accomplished Bass fisherman of all time. Gerry is now retired and living in Winnipeg with his wife Judy.

Brian began running the lodge in 1977 after his father, Vic, retired as captain.

YOUR HOSTS

Introducing the new owners of Pine Island Island Lodge. Adam, Kyla and their son Kade.

After decades of being guests of the lodge, good friends of Brain and Barb Burgess and with so many fond memories - our son Kade being a 4th generation family member at the lodge.

When we heard that the Burgess family was thinking it was time for them to slow down and enjoy some of the finer things in life, our family decided we could not let an opportunity to continue the legacy of Pine Island Lodge pass us buy and let somebody else take over, so in October of 2022 we made things official and are now the new proud owners at Pine Island Lodge. Do not worry, Brian and Barb are still with us and excited to remain with us for the foreseeable future.
